Broadband Availability and Speed Now a Factor In Real Estate Prices

Friday, August 26th, 2011

A recent study in the UK has revealed that in addition to the neighborhood, the crime rates, the proximity to local shops and to local schools, a new factor is becoming important for home buyers – the availability and speed of broadband in that area.

ISP Review conducted a survey recently that highlighted just how important broadband was becoming in a lot of people’s choice of property. A massive 69% of those who took the survey revealed that they would be significantly less likely to purchase a house if it could not offer high speed internet access. When pressed further, an incredible 74% agreed that broadband internet was critically important.

In a further sign of its importance, the leading property site, Right Move has now started to display broadband speed alongside room dimensions, number of rooms and size of garden in the information they supply about a property. In addition many of the other large property sites such as Prime Location, Find a Property and Zoopla are soon to follow suit and start displaying broadband speed in their listings.

For those who live out in the country and are worried this will affect the value of their house, all is not lost. In the UK the government has recently committed to increasing high speed broadband availability to every community in the country and have pledged £830 million to achieve this.
